In August of 2009, members of the 1st Maryland Cavalry traced the last campaign of Ridgely Brown before he was killed in action on June 1, 1864. This trip started in the vicinity of Hanover Courthouse and Hanover Junction located a couple of miles from the courthouse. Hanover Junction was the location of Camp St. Mary's where the Maryland Line wintered during 1863/1864. In May of 1864, Colonel Johnson was informed by General Lee that Federal cavalry had been attempting to cross the Pamunkey River in the vicinity of Hanoverton. Col. Johnson led the 1st Maryland Cavalry under Col. Brown and the Baltimore Light Artillery towards Hanoverton to intercept the Federal Cavalry. This path lead them past Hanover Tavern pictured above where Adj George Booth captured and paroled several Union pickets that were captured on the movement towards Hanoverton.
